Home is where the rabbits live

A solo exhibition by Karla Dickens, including collaborations with, and work by, Nils Crompton

Statement for press release

‘Football was always a part of my life’, says South Sydney-born and bred artist Karla Dickens, now living in Lismore. ‘Redfern Oval was our place of worship’. Her latest exhibition, including collaborations in film and installation with Sydney film-maker Nils Crompton, sees Karla pay tribute to community spirit, the determination of the underdog, and the quirky, iconic prevalence of rabbits – both small and large – in the streets of Redfern and South Sydney, the beloved home of the Rabbitohs football team.

Dickens is well known for her rich, collage-based paintings, which also feature in this exhibition and support a lively lot of rabbits. As Maurice O’Riordan, editor of Art Monthly Australia, notes in the exhibition’s catalogue essay: ‘Bunnies run in rings or radiate out from each painting’s centre, in some ways freed from their inner-city and football associations. They are allowed to roam larger in the sphere of Karla’s imagination where details are more colourful, more patterned, ripe with the song and scent of birds and flowers.’

Home is where the rabbits live is a multi-layered and soulful exhibition with more twists and turns than a Rabbitoh winger. Dickens and Crompton celebrate and expand on the loyalty and imagery of football fandom. Through painting, film, photography and installation, the exhibition tells a timeless tale of love, hope, and belonging.
