Bungaree’s Farm

Bungaree’s Farm

Description

Bungaree’s Farm is a new site specific exhibition of large scale projections and installation work presented in T5 – the Camouflage Fuel Tank located at Georges Heights Oval (Mosman). It is the first time this massive industrial space on Sydney Harbour has been used for exhibition and cultural purposes.

Bungaree’s Farm is a multi arts response and interpretation to life of indigenous figure Bungaree and his connection with the Mosman area. This project coincides with the 200th anniversary of Governor Macquarie’s land grant to Bungaree at Georges Heights, the first such land grant from colonial authorities to an Aboriginal person in Australia.

Located at Georges Heights / Middle Head, Mosman, Bungaree’s Farm is an immersive arts event curated by Djon Mundine OAM. It features the work of contemporary Aboriginal artists: Daniel Boyd, Jason Wing, Peter McKenzie, Leanne Tobin, Amala Groom, Blak Douglas (Adam Hill), Caroline Oakley, Bjorn Stewart, Karla Dickens, Leah Flanagan, Warwick Keen and Djon Mundine.

Bungaree was a key Aboriginal figure in early colonial Sydney and was the first individual known to have been called an ‘Australian’. He became a well-known identity in early Sydney with his activities often reported in the newspapers, journals and official correspondence of the day. Bungaree’s portrait was captured by a variety of artists in the colony and were then exhibited in Europe. He is famous for greeting newcomers – on behalf of his people – as ships entered Sydney harbour – and he joined early expeditions and explorers, including Matthew Flinders, to circumnavigate Australia.

Bunagree’s Farm opens for public viewing for 9 days only on site 10am – 4pm – (31 January – 8 February 2015). Free. All ages event.

This project coincides with the Mosman Art Gallery group exhibition ‘Bungaree: the First Australian’ – currently on show at the Gallery to 22 February.

Bungaree’s land grant anniversary will also be celebrated through a number of key public program and community events.
