…….”For Karla Dickens, an Aboriginal Artist who grew up in the Sydney, these statues are symbolic of an undeniable Aboriginal presence in the ubran landscape, challenging mainstream perceptions of Aboriginal identited. Dickens’ paintings reclaim these sterotype images of Aboriginal people in honour of the spiritual ancestors who were the creators of the land. The spiritual presence is depicted through carefully hand-beaded shadows- Dickens says: through my work i hope to find a tranquil co-existence between these painted figurines and our ancestors- the guardians are in shadow.”
“Dickens uses a palette of post-war colour to bring these kictsh concrete sculptures to life, now dancing on the canvas, liberated from their controlled landscape.”
